Frequently Asked Questions

Is this legal?

Yes. Every parent has the right to provide an appropriate education for their child, and personalized schooling at home is a highly desirable alternative to a group setting.

Is there a curriculum?

We're very proud of the curriculum we have developed at QED, which begins by covering core curriculum standards and builds dynamically from there. We believe our curriculum produces the highest possible results in student learning, motivation and achievement.

What about socializing and making friends?

One of the first questions many people ask is, "Don't children miss being away from school friends?" Of course this may depend on the individual, but in most cases the short answer is "no." Children have many opportunities to meet new friends at after-school activities and summer camp, and they will continue to play with existing friends after school. During the school day, children are actively engaged in enriching activities with their teachers.

Will we be able to return to (or apply to) traditional schools in the future?

Quality Education by Design provides families with extensive documentation, including report cards, teacher evaluations and portfolios of students' work. In our personal experience, the children were accepted into more than 10 different New York City private schools when they returned to traditional schooling after three years of being educated privately at home. We felt coming from this enriched background provided a distinct advantage to our children in applying to schools.

Field trips and traveling

Here you are limited only by your imagination and your budget. Many amazing trips can be planned around curricular studies; from as close by as our local Manhattan museums and historic neighborhoods to as far away as Egypt or the Galapagos Islands. Occasionally teachers are available to travel with families or may even take children to these locations on their own. All trips are supported by appropriate activities and materials to enrich the experience.

Where will school take place?

Typically a family will have a quiet area/room of their home dedicated to serving as the classroom.

How many hours a day and days in a week should a child have school?

The number of required school hours is mandated by the Department of Education. Within this framework there is room for flexibility in planning.

Costs?

Quality Education by Design costs include teacher(s), books, supplies, laptop computers, travel expenses and our consultation fees.

We will be happy to discuss detailed answers to the above questions and many more (such as those below) when we meet at our initial consultation. You may contact us at the email addresses on the home page.

"It must be remembered that the purpose of education is not to fill the minds of students with facts... it is to teach them to think, if that is possible, and always to think for themselves."
